Getting to Know Our EVSC Alumni

Taking the Show on the Road: From Aiken Theatre to Broadway

What summer musical production(s) did you participate in?

I participated in “George M” and “Oklahoma!”

What roles did you have in the productions you participated in?

I was Jerry Cohan (the father) in George M and ensemble in Oklahoma.

What is your favorite EVSC Summer Musical memory?

It’s hard to narrow it down to one memory. Those summers, you were just with your people. Every evening was spent rehearsing and then you would go somewhere to hang out together. We spent more time together than I did with my family, and we came together to put on the best darn show we could. And we had great leaders guiding us who demanded excellence. For a student show, it was a pretty professional atmosphere.

What skills did you learn while participating in the musical that you use today?

I have gone on to perform in musical theater (Broadway, national tours, cruise ships) and now a touring a cappella group, Straight No Chaser, for my career, so everything was transferrable. Butpeople like Sue Schriber, Terry Becker, Eva Kattau, Andy Lindauer, Ricky Newman, etc. knew how to bring the best out of young people. There were consequences for not knowing your lines, for missing an entrance, for acting up when it was time to buckle down. They taught us that making aquality product does not come easy, and that you get out of things what you put into them.

What advice would you give to your high school self?

Giving back is a cheat code to happiness. Being able to brighten someone else’s day or even bring a smile to someone’s face will make you feel better, as well. So my goal is always to be the positive change I want to see in the world. Sometimes I fall short, but I believe if I keep that as a North Star, I’ll always be going in the right direction.

Who is your favorite Oz character? Are you Team Glinda or Team Wicked Witch?

We did The Wiz at Harrison my senior year and I was the Scarecrow, so I am partial to that character. Plus, “If I Only Had a Brain” is a great song; there is a cool, slowed down jazz version by Harry Connick, Jr. that will make you think you’re hearing it for the first time. As for where I stand on
the witches, I saw an interesting new theory where Glinda was made out to be the actual villain, but going back to my youth and watching The Wizard of Oz, I remember the Wicked Witch scaring the heck out of me, so I’ll stay with Glinda for now.

A Commitment to Supporting Community

Steve’s love and passion for the arts started young, and was cultivated by his mentors in the EVSC. He has been spent his life dedicated to the arts: he is a member of the a cappella group, Straight No Chaser (which will be in Evansville on December 14th), and has performed on Broadway in Mamma Mia and Good Vibrations. He has been able to tour the world on tours, cruise ships, and with orchestras.

Steve accredits the support of others in his community to his success, and is diligent about finding opportunities to give back to his local community.  “Giving back is a cheat code to happiness. Being able to brighten someone else’s day or even bring a smile to someone’s face will make you feel better, as well. So my goal is always to be the positive change I want to see in the world. Sometimes I fall short, but I believe if I keep that as a North Star, I’ll always be going in the right direction.”
