Jackie Barrett, retired educator
Instilling the love of learning by doing:
From an early age, Jackie was curious and loved learning new things. Coming from a family of teachers, she observed and internalized the values of patience, compassion, and persistence.
She used these values as a student and eventually applied these to her kindergarten classroom. She also instilled these hard-working ethics into her family, supporting them through their challenges and celebrating their greatest achievements.

Where did you teach?
I taught in public education for 33 years, and I retired in 2015.
I had the privilege to teach at Fairlawn Elementary, Hebron Elementary, and Highland Elementary.
Who was your favorite teacher(s)?
My favorite teacher was Karin Bagby. I was actually her student teacher in first grade at Stringtown and she really taught me a lot about leading the classroom.
She was fun with a great sense of humor and her students adored her.
What skills did you learn from your childhood teachers that you applied in your classroom?
I learned the love of learning and hands on teaching. The love of books, and prioritizing making the learning fun!
What is your favorite school memory?
The age I realized I wanted to be a teacher. My second grade teacher was a pretty red-headed lady who made all her students feel truly special and loved. She made me realize that I could make that difference to someone else's life.
My favorite classroom memory is sharing my own family with my students.
