EVSC Alumni Spotlight

Reitz High School Alumni of 1983

Wayne Ellis, Founding Partner of BFit Gym + Fitness

The BFit team isn't just active in the gym! We were so excited last summer when BFit approached us with their proposal for their first ever "BFit Family Night". This event was an amazing night of family focused fun activities with all proceeds going to Hangers! Events like this provide the resources that allow us to support EVSC students with needed clothing and hygiene items. BFit planned and executed this entire event, and it's this "make a difference" mentality that makes their organization such an invaluable community partner!

Getting to Know Our EVSC Alumni

Where did you graduate from?

I graduated from Reitz High School in 1983.

Who was your favorite teacher?

I was very fortunate to have many great teachers during my time at West Terrace as well as Reitz. I guess the one who stands out most is John Aramowicz. He was not only a great teacher but what I learned from him went way beyond the classroom. When I became a parent, I always looked toward Mr. Aramowicz as a role model. I was very fortunate to have a friendship with him that extended well beyond my years at Reitz High School and I appreciate everything that he taught me throughout my life.

What activities were you involved in?

I played tennis all 4 years of high school earning my varsity letter my last 3 years. I wish that I had played basketball but for whatever reason I was scared that I wasn't good enough so I didn't try out. I was also active in the speech program and loved competing in discussion which is informal debate. There were many other activities but those were the two that I was most passionate about.

What advice would you give to your high school self?

My best advice to my high school self would be to take more risks and don't be afraid of failure. I didn't learn this until well after high school and I think I could have accomplished a lot more had I not been afraid to take that first step.

What is your favorite memory from high school?

My favorite school memory was probably meeting my wife and dating her. (I might get in a lot of trouble if I said anything else...) We started dating on a youth trip with St. James West Church. The youth pastor at that time was Gene Backes who went on to teach at Reitz.

What skills did you learn in school that are useful in your current role?

I learned many skills that are useful in my job today. I was always very strong in math and that skillset has carried me forward with utilizing Excel as well as accounting. I"m struggling to think of anything that hasn't helped me along the way.

How has your community involvement impacted your life?

I have been a partner in BFit for 25 years now while being the managing partner for the past 7 years. I am very passionate about fitness so my job is somewhat missional. Whether someone chooses BFit as a means of living a healthier lifestyle or uses a different resource, I love the impact that fitness can make on someone's life.

We have supported more organizations in the community than I could name. It's so encouraging to know that we have made a difference in member's lives as well as clubs, schools, & charities throughout the Evansville area. I feel just as much satisfaction in knowing that we contribute and invest in the community as I do from leading BFit.
